Glossary - Y

Y
Yeast

Yeasts are single-celled microorganisms that are members of the fungus family. They form part of the normal human microbiome, although some strains may be pathogenic if allowed to overgrow (see Candida albicans). Saccharomyces boulardii is a ‘friendly’ yeast strain that has been shown to have beneficial characteristics, particularly in relation to diarrhoea.
