Long term impact of anti-biotics
This study investigated children who received at least one prescription of anti-biotics in their first 2 years of life. Over 14K children were assessed over an 8-year period for type and timing of anti-biotic exposure and general health conditions over this period.
Results showed that a correlation existed between early antibiotic exposure and later development of asthma, allergic diseases, and autoimmune conditions. Although findings highlight associations, not causation, it can be concluded that early life microbiome composition is a critical health determinant, compromising this during key developmental periods can have long-term consequences.
