Gut microbiota altered by food additives
A systematic literature review of articles investigating the impact of food additives on gut microbiota and IBS was carried out via PubMed Web of Science and Scopus databases. Artificial sweeteners & emulsifiers, along with preservatives such as sodium benzoate, sodium nitrite, and potassium sorbate, were found to alter the gut microbiota composition in mice and in in-vitro studies. Further research is needed to investigate the interplay between food additives and gut microbiota in humans.
