Nicotine free vapour causes increased gut permeability
Mice models of acute and chronic e-cigarette aerosol inhalation, mouse colon transcriptomics and mouse and human gut derived organoids in co-culture models, were assessed for the effects of e-cigarette use on the gut barrier. Results showed that e-cigarettes disrupt the integrity of the gut epithelial barrier. Acute exposure to e-cigarettes did not have an effect on the colon but chronic exposure over 3 months showed significant changes in gene expression. Such disruption is associated with the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a failure to induce protective reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, colons of mice exposed to nicotine-free, but not nicotine-containing e-cigarettes have impaired tight junction markers and are inflamed.
