Brachyspira found in diarrhoea-dominant IBS sufferers
62 irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and 31 control subjects were recruited to investigate bacterial stool analysis in Sweden. Results found a strong association between the Brachyspira genus and IBS. Mucosal Brachyspira colonisation was observed in 40% of patients with IBS-D (IBS diarrhoea) but not in any healthy individual. A really promising study that encourages further research in this area.
