Microbial strains stabilise over time

This study used two published data sets combined with their unique strain tracking program to analyze the stability of microbial strains in infants after birth. 31 infant faecal samples that included various collection points at <6 months and at 1, 2, and 3 years were analysed. 14 had anti-biotic therapy within the first 3 years of life, 17 did not.

Among the set of results, the anti-biotic free group established an infant specific pattern for the appearance and number of dominant strains during the first 3 years; those treated with antibiotics had resulted in a unique strain change pattern for certain infants. This highlights that microbial strain change is inherent in developing the infant gut microbial ecosystem.
