Gut bacteria metabolites linked to quality sleep
This study carried out a randomised trial using mice who were bacteria depleted against a control group. Sleep analysis was carried out on all specimens, along with faecal collection and viable bacterial counts. Results showed that the microbiota depleted mice showed significant changes in neurotransmission-related amino acids and vitamin metabolism in the intestine. Furthermore, rapid eye movement (REM) episodes were higher with more total time spent in REMS during both light and dark phases in the microbiota depleted mice. This study concludes that changes to the intestinal microbiota have the potential to improve sleep-related problems such as daytime sleepiness and insomnia.
