Bacterial diversity linked to nutritional status
A small cross-sectional study of 60 subjects with liver cirrhosis was split 50:50 into those with muscle wastage and those without. Metagenomic gene sequencing was carried out to analyse gut microbiota. Species diversity was found to be significantly lower in the group with muscle wastage. Specifically, they concluded that E. coli, P. stomatis and B. uniformis were closely related to liver cirrhosis. Further studies should be carried out to investigate whether enriching intestinal microbiota can improve nutritional status (limit muscle wastage) in patients with liver cirrhosis.
