October 21st is Happy Apple Day – started in 1990 as a simple celebration of the apple and now a national event in the UK. We thought it was a good day to bring you 20 fun facts to celebrate this humble fruit. #appleday
- There are over 3,500 varieties of apples in the UK
- There are 8,000 varieties of apple worldwide
- Apple trees can live for over 100 years
- Apples are high in fibre, Vitamin C, potassium and polyphenols (antioxidant nutrients)
- Apples are members of the Rose family
- The heaviest apple ever recorded weighed 1.6 kg
- Apples produce a type of gas (ethylene) that can help to ripen other fruit
- The smallest apple grown for consumption is the Rockit apple
- The largest apple grown for consumption is the Hokuto apple
- It can take between four and ten years before an apple tree can produce fruit
- Last year, over 91 million tons of apples were produced worldwide
- It takes around 5 apples to make 1 pint of apple cider
