The Ultra Marathon Study
Efficacy of Lab4 probiotics in the Marathon des Sables
Aim
This study aimed to assess the effect of a 12-week probiotic supplementation on race time and extracellular heat shock protein response to a multi-day ultra-endurance exercise event.
Method
- Thirty-two Marathon des Sables 2015 competitors (mean age 41 years) were divided into three groups.
- The volunteers were supplemented for 12 weeks:
Group 1 (n=11) maintained their regular diet
Group 2 (n=11) took daily 1 capsule of 30 billion Lab4 probiotics
Group 3 (n=10) took daily 5 g of powder comprised of 5 billion Lab4 probiotics, 5 billion Lactobacillus salivarius CUL61 and 0.9 g L-glutamine
- After 12 weeks supplementation, the volunteers undertook the Marathon des Sables (294.4 km, 7-day ultra-marathon, across the Southern Moroccan portion of Sahara Desert, max temperature 39°C).
Results
Race times
Extracellular heat shock protein (eHsp72)
Conclusion
Lab4 probiotic supplementation improved the runners’ completion time during the ultra-marathon.
