Probiotics and bowel habits

It is estimated that almost one-fifth of adults in the United States suffer from symptoms of constipation and around a third of all adults over the age of 60. Constipation is defined as a person having less than three bowel movements a week, with hard, dry and lumpy stools that may be difficult to pass and a feeling of never emptying the bowels.

Constipation is more likely to occur in women, older adults, people on medications, with certain functional gastrointestinal disorders and in those who are dehydrated and/or eat low amounts of fiber.
