Gut microbiome and Eczema
Understanding the direct correlation between the gut microbiome and eczema is being researched more and more nowadays.
The number of people with allergies has increased dramatically in the UK over the past 50 years and 40% of children now develop allergic conditions such as eczema, asthma, and rhinitis (hay fever). Whilst the conditions often persist through life, most allergies develop in the first two years of life, particularly during the first six months following birth.
Infant eczema involves inflamed red patches on your baby’s skin and can be uncomfortable and distressing for both babies and parents.
And, if children are diagnosed with atopic eczema by two years of age, they have up to an 80% chance of developing asthma by age 12 and higher risks of rhinitis.
There are many reasons suggested for why eczema develops and numerous ‘treatments’ suggested to ease the symptoms, but experts now agree that exposure to sufficient amounts of good bacteria during the first weeks of life can help to reduce the risk of allergy development generally and the risk of eczema specifically.
