Mindful eating tips and tricks

Eating Tips

It is useful to know that digestion starts a long time before our food reaches our stomach.

Being aware of good eating tips and taking time to eat more mindfully, can help to relieve any difficulties we may have with digesting and absorbing the nutrients from our food and potentially alleviate uncomfortable and unpleasant digestive symptoms.

Here are 12 tips to support mindful eating:

Eat when you are hungry – obvious maybe, but it is very easy to eat out of boredom or another emotional cue.
Choose nutritionally dense foods that nourish your body
Consider where your food comes from – is it local, home-made, responsibly sourced?
Consider how you feel – before you start eating, take a couple of seconds to reflect upon how you are feeling
Sit down to eat – don’t eat standing up or on the go
Just eat – turn off all screens and remove other distractions
Be mindful of the actions of eating – lifting your fork to your mouth, how the food feels in your mouth
Eat slowly and chew your food well – 30 times has been reported as the ideal target number of times to chew each mouthful
Eating food that takes work can increase mindfulness – shell-on prawns, pistachios, an orange
Put your knife and fork (or other utensils) down between mouthfuls
Stop eating when you are full – not when your plate is empty
If you are struggling to be mindful, switch hands – using our knife and fork with the opposite hands to those we are used to can force us to eat more mindfully as the brain needs to work harder.
