Travel more wisely

Travelling abroad for a holiday or business can bring with it some undesirable consequences that potentially last long after we return home.

Environmental changes can affect gut balance, potentially resulting in traveller’s diarrhoea (TD). Stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, altitude changes and disrupted body rhythms can all have an effect and this is often exacerbated by eating local food, increased alcohol intake and exposure to local water and an unfamiliar range of local ‘bugs’.

The best way to avoid TD is to avoid contaminated foods and liquids, but this is often easier said than done and the suggested medications can sometimes have unwanted side effects.

Friendly bacteria, however, have been shown to offer a safe and effective method to prevent TD[1], being relatively inexpensive and well-tolerated, even for prolonged use. They help to reduce the ability of toxins to attach to the gut wall, enhance the immune response and re-establish a normal gut flora.

Ideally, we should all include friendly bacteria in our diets every day to support gut health, but if not, it is certainly beneficial to have this support when travelling.

The recommendations regarding when to start taking the beneficial bacteria for travel varies, although most experts agree that to provide maximum benefit, it is useful to start taking them prior to a trip abroad and to continue taking them after returning home.

For ease of use when travelling, pack a high-quality supplement that does not require refrigeration and does not spoil easily.  If you are visiting a tropical location, store away from intense heat in a cool dry place.

Each capsule of ProVen Probiotics Acidophilus and Bifidus for Travellers contains 12.5 billion Lab4 friendly bacteria along with calcium, ginger, glutamine and aloe vera to support the gut whilst travelling. The Lab4 bacteria has been shown in clinical trials to reduce Clostridium difficile diarrhoea and to significantly improve IBS symptoms.

With 14 days supply of easy-to-take capsules, ProVen Acidophilus and Bifidus for Travellers is small, easy to pack and does not need to be stored in the refrigerator.
